As WA's largest regional university campus, Edith Cowan University (ECU) South West offers future students a wide variety of courses and an interconnected network of flexible study and support options for students.
Through our local connections and partnerships, students have access to participate in unique learning opportunities as part of their studies. For example, ECU South West leads the Creative Tech Village, the State's first creative technology innovation network funded by the State Government.
Teacher Education courses lead the nation
ECU has the widest range of specialised courses in Early Childhood and Primary Education available anywhere in WA.
An aspiring teacher, Miss Hannah Newton is currently studying Early Childhood Studies and is passionate about early development in children.
"Discovering that ECU South West offered an Early Childhood Education Bachelor meant I could study close to home at a world-class university," she said.
"The knowledgeable lecturers are incredibly supportive. The classes are intimate, allowing me to develop relationships with mentors and peers that will continue to support me into my teaching career."
Gain early professional experience
Miss Newton has been on several work placements which have challenged her thinking and enabled her to put theory to practice.
"The practical placements have enabled me to refine and expand my teaching skills in early childhood education, making me feel as prepared as possible for my teaching career," she said.
Options to suit the needs of South West students
A mix of on-campus workshops and online study has provided Miss Newton with the flexibility to fit her studies around work and life commitments.
"The University has been responsive to the unique needs of students attending the campus from a range of regions within the South West." she said.
Highly regarded nursing and midwifery courses
Nursing graduate Mr Kavan Patel chose to study nursing at ECU because of the reputation of the program.
"As a teenager, I was always interested in science and the human body. I became the first person in my family who is qualified to provide healthcare," he said.
"The facilities at ECU's South West campus are advanced, and the rooms for nursing practice are set up similar to a real-life clinical ward which helps you to engage, learn and participate."
Excellent student support
Mr Patel also explains that the staff at ECU are supportive.
"The University provides many workshops for assignments that include formatting and referencing. I found these were extremely helpful and was able to use the skills I learnt to hit the ground running with my assessments," he said.
ECU South West has also attained a University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) for the South West, which will see all health students receive unprecedented levels of support and career prospects.
Placement opportunities to gain real world experience
All health students will be offered exceptional regional practicum placements and support, funded through UDRH.
Students are able to gain real world experiences in the area, which boost their employability while helping the local community.
Choice, flexibility and quality
Studying at ECU South West means being spoilt for choice over a variety of courses and having flexible study options including, online and part-time.
The University's focus on putting students first has been recognised by the 2023 Good Universities Guide, which has awarded ECU a five-star rating for teaching quality for 16 years in a row.
