Breaking the mould

Cameron was awarded the Charmaine Dragun Memorial Award which recognises an outstanding journalist, photographer, blogger or media contributor under the age of 25 who has committed to fair and balanced reporting on young people or youth issues.

Cameron is currently a Producer at ABC Radio Perth. His recent reports have focused on young people breaking the mould of traditional activism and how digital campaigns are increasingly being used as alternatives to traditional strikes and picketing.

"The use of digital spaces means people from diverse health and cultural backgrounds can have a voice," Cameron said.

"It's an important issue to me as I always aim for my writing to empower someone who may otherwise get ignored by the mainstream media."

Cameron graduated from ECU in 2022 with a Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting.

"Doing the diploma allowed me to take my passion for writing and meeting new people and help turn it into a career as a multiplatform journalist," Cameron said.

"It feels great to receive acknowledgment for my work, especially from the WA Youth Awards and Charmaine’s family which emphasises social justice and improving the lives of young people."
