ECU's recycling success

The recycling program initiated by ECU staff on Mount Lawley Campus is growing its success every year, with this past year saving close to 100kg of waste plastics and aluminium from landfill.

Campus Services Coordinator Jason Chrisp based at ECU's Mount Lawley Campus initiated the project and has been running the campus's recycling program for four years, growing its success every year.

Jason shared that this past year the program sent 87kg of plastic bottle tops, 3kg of plastic bread tags and 5kg of aluminium ring pulls to recycling instead of landfill.

The almost 100kg annual collection is gathered from the four recycling stations set up across the Mount Lawley campus by the Campus Services team.

Jason explains that the CSO team empties the recycling stations each month and takes the haul to various recycling organisations equipped to receive the different types of items.

Doing good feels good

"Containers for Change receive our bottle tops, which we gather from the special lid only bins, while the bread tags are given to Oz Bread Tags for Wheelchairs who provide wheelchairs for disadvantaged people," said Jason.

"The aluminium goes to Wheelchairs for Kids, another great organisation bringing help to people who desperately need it.

"It’s a really positive, feel-good program to be involved in as we are helping save the environment and supporting people in need at the same time. I am hoping to spread the word and get more of the ECU community across all our campuses involved so we can grow the positive impact of the program."

Jason explains how he started the program in 2021 with one recycling station outside the CSO office on the Mount Lawley campus and how by December that year ECU gave funding for four stations to be set up and maintained.

"I've been pleased to see the Mount Lawley campus community really embrace the recycling program, with staff and students and the cafes on campus all bringing their items to the stations."

Mount Lawley recycling stations are located at the B3 CSO office, B17 staff lounge and B1 L4 staff lounge.

Everyone can recycle

Jason is keen to encourage everyone to recycle everything they can.

"There are so many things you can recycle that may surprise you, like your old toothbrush and razor to coffee pods, fluro light tubes and plug-in air fresheners - City Farm has a great drop-off point for all of these items."

ECU recycles all metal items from both metropolitan campuses, contact your CSO if you have metal items for disposal.
