Three new exhibitions with themes as diverse as soil and dirt, musical scores, and photography are opening at Edith Cowan University’s (ECU’s) Mount Lawley Campus this week.
Soiled
Soiled opening at Gallery25 incorporates a series of installation and video works that explore the complex relationship between humans, soil, and dirt.

Artist and Researcher Dr Cassandra Tytler is a Forrest Creative and Performance Research Fellow with ECU's Centre for People Place, and Planet (CPPP). With the CPPP, Dr Tytler has had the opportunity to connect with a cross-section of researchers from varying disciplines to enrich this practice-led research.
Through her creative research she aims to bring people, other beings, and places together to foster connection so that exhibition participants experience the work beyond their individual selves.
She hopes that through these experiences people feel a part of larger ecosystems and therefore realise their responsibility to them.
Dr Tytler said the exhibition would explore soil and dirt from an ecological, social, cultural and political perspective.
"The artworks examine how the social narratives of what is 'soiled' and what is 'pure' reinforce hierarchies of race, gender, and social class," she said.
One feature of Soiled is a collaboration with Performing Artist and Aboriginal Noongar/Yamatji man Trevor Ryan. The video is titled, 'Voiceless Mask'.

Another artwork incorporates pieces of cloth that Dr Tytler buried in places with special meaning to her.

"The soil speaks," she said.
"If you look closely, you can see some roots have started weaving their way through the fabric."
And a unique and fun part of the exhibition will be the dirt cookies Dr Tytler prepares for participants to sample during the exhibition opening and the artist talk.
"I encourage people to come along and try them," Dr Tytler said.

Transports
In his debut photography exhibition, WAAPA alumnus Eduardo Cossio unveils a series of images capturing the fluidity of perception. Playing with perspectives, the photographs prompt viewers to renegotiate their perception of the world. Echoing his experimental music practice, the photographs, quiet and contemplative, invite a free-fall into the viewer’s imagination.
