When it comes to cutting-edge research and unparalleled student support, Edith Cowan University (ECU) stands out as a destination of choice for aspiring researchers worldwide.

For Dr Gideon Johnson, who just completed his PhD in ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery in December 2024, the decision to pursue his research here at ECU was driven by the University's industry-leading research environment and unwavering support for higher degree by research (HDR) students.

Gideon's journey to ECU is as impressive as it is inspiring. With a career spanning three continents, he was previously recognised with the Charles Sturt University Distinguished Alumni Award for his outstanding contributions to healthcare. A lifelong learner, Gideon holds two bachelor's degrees and two postgraduate diplomas, showcasing his dedication to advancing his knowledge and expertise.

Conducting a novel intervention for delirium in adult intensive care units, Gideon's work aimed to transform care for critically ill patients and underscores ECU's reputation as a hub for impactful research that addresses real-world challenges.

Gideon's PhD work produced five publications, four of which have been published in top-tier scientific Journals, including the International Journal of Nursing Studies (IJNS), the Journal with the highest impact factor in nursing. His PhD work is already gaining citations and recognition in the critical care delirium research.

Why ECU?

For Gideon, ECU's strong emphasis on student support and collaborative research was a key factor in choosing the University.

"The level of guidance, mentorship and resources provided by ECU is unmatched," Gideon shared.

"From day one, I felt part of a community that is committed to my success."

ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery research portfolio, led by Professor Lisa Whitehead, boasts an impressive number of world-class academics. Recognised among the top two percent of public health and health services scientists globally, Professor Whitehead's leadership exemplifies the high quality of mentorship available to ECU students.

Adding to this reputation is Professor Sara Bayes, a recipient of the prestigious Excellence in Research award at the 2024 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA).

Dr Bayes is a research-focused Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Her role includes leading studies, supervising Higher Degree by Research students and developing research capacity within midwifery.

A global community of researchers

ECU's HDR program attracts students from across the globe, including countries like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Iran, China, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, India, Ghana, the UK, Greece and Germany.

The calibre of the School's academics ensures that 75 per cent are eligible to supervise research students and partnerships. Combined with more than 90 collaborators and 31 international institutions, ECU offers a truly global research experience.

Gideon states that these factors, and notably ECU’s commitment to Indigenous communities and people from CALD and LGBTQA+ communities, made ECU stand out as his top choice of university.

Supporting research excellence

Gideon completed his PhD while working in clinical practice at NHS London and then academia at King’s College London. He says ECU's international collaboration and emphasis on preparing students to be world-ready contributed to this.

"I was also supported to attend the research symposium in Perth last September as the HDR student representative, which further highlights the impact. More people know about ECU through these exposure and relationships," said Gideon.

To further empower students like Gideon, ECU provides a range of scholarships, including project-based and general support scholarships. These opportunities reflect the University's commitment to ensuring financial and academic support for its HDR candidates.
