Edith Cowan University (ECU)'s Professor Chandra Salgado Kent has been named as one of Australia's new Superstars of STEM.

Sixty stellar Superstars of STEM were officially announced by the Minister of Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP, highlighting the strong diversity of women and non-binary people in Australian science and technology.

Superstars of STEM, an innovative program created by Science & Technology Australia, aims to smash society's gender assumptions about scientists and increase the public visibility of women and non-binary people in STEM.

The program equips brilliant and diverse STEM experts with advanced communication skills and provides opportunities for them to engage with the media, on stage and in schools. These opportunities are enabling them to build a public profile and become role models for the next generation of STEM stars.

A creative approach to conservation science

Professor Chandra Salgado Kent from ECU's School of Science and the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research is a marine scientist who's taking a creative approach to making positive change in conservation science.

Bringing us closer to extraordinary marine creatures through cutting-edge technology, Professor Salgado Kent's work involves deploying satellite trackers, using drones and listening to vocalisations of whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions.

Research into how human activities impact these species is of special interest to Professor Salgado Kent, who communicates her findings to governments, industries and communities to support protection of marine wildlife and their habitats.

Professor Salgado Kent founded Oceans Blueprint in 2018 to advance science communication and inspire action for sustainable oceans. She is a WA Parks Foundation Ambassador, a co-coordinator for Australia on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force and actively supports equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM.
