The annual Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list from Clarivate has revealed Edith Cowan University (ECU) Professor Laichang Zhang is among the world's most influential.

Professor Zhang is Program Leader for Mechanical Engineering at ECU and the Head of Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing.

He has been responsible for the design, processing and mechanical performance of different types of metallic materials, achieving high-impact research publications over the past 20 years.

"I am honoured and thrilled to receive this news from Clarivate," Professor Zhang said.

"I am so pleased that my team's endeavours to improve mechanical properties of engineering materials and understanding their mechanism have attracted such significant interest and our work has become one of most influential in materials science."

Professor Zhang is renowned for his expertise in 3D printing (metal additive manufacturing), metallic biomaterials, lightweight alloys and structures, and high-strength alloys and composites. He has conducted extensive cross-disciplinary research activities in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering.

World's Most Influential Researchers

Analysts at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) have recognised 6,849 Highly Cited Researchers in 2023, from more than 1,300 institutions in 67 countries.

The selection process draws on data from the Web of Science citation index, together with analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the ISI at Clarivate.

"My research endeavours will continue to be dedicated to understanding the improvement mechanism for high-performance engineering materials, to better meet industrial application requirements around the globe," Professor Zhang said.

Former ECU Professor Hongqi Sun also made the prestigious list for his extensive work in chemical engineering.
