ABC Radio National's The Science Show has tapped Edith Cowan University's (ECU's) Professor Rob Newton as one of Australia's "Hottest 100" scientists.

Professor Newton is Professor of Exercise Medicine in ECU's Exercise Medicine Research Institute, which he established in 2004. He was named the Western Australian Premier's Scientist of the Year in 2019 and has received a career achievement award from the Cancer Council of WA.

The Science Show's presenter Dr Robyn Williams noted that Professor Newton has led important work on exercise and cancer, including the biochemistry of the body's reaction to exercise and how it can make cancer treatment more effective.

"I am so proud and humbled to be named in The Science Show's Top 100 Australian Scientists. Never could have made such an impact without the support of ECU over the past 20 years," Professor Newton said.

"Fantastic to have exercise medicine recognised as an important research discipline and particularly how my team and I have been able to change patient supportive care, in particular for people with cancer."

Professor Newton has published over 1,000 scientific papers including 544 refereed scientific journal articles, 450 conference abstracts and papers, three books, 17 book chapters and has a current Scopus h-Index of 94 with his work being cited over 31,400 times. As of 2023, Professor Newton has attracted over $50 million in competitive research funding.

The Science Show gives Australians a unique insight into the latest scientific research and debate, covering topics from the physics of cricket to prime ministerial biorhythms.
