Edith Cowan University (ECU) Professor of Exercise Medicine, Professor Rob Newton, has been elected to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

The Academy welcomed 31 new Fellows on October 24, with Professor Newton among the seven selected to represent Western Australia.

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences is the impartial, authoritative, cross-sector voice of health and medical science in Australia, which is aimed at advancing health and medical research in Australia.

Fellows are elected by their peers for their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to health and medical science in Australia and are, collectively, a representative and independent voice, through which the Academy engages with the community, industry, and governments.

Academy President Professor Louise Baur said new Fellows were elected by their peers through a competitive process, which recognised their significant and ongoing contributions to health and medical sciences.

"Our new Fellows have a truly exceptional body of work, with each of them considered international leaders in their respective fields," she said.

"Our Fellowship represents the breadth and diversity of Australia's health and medical expertise, allowing us to draw on independent, expert and evidence-based advice to drive change and improve health for all."

Professor Newton said the Fellowship award is a recognition of exercise medicine as an essential part of overall health and medical research and care in Australia, with applications across a range of diseases and disorders, including cancer.

"The recognition is really important in terms of achieving greater funding and support for exercise medicine, particularly as it relates to exercise oncology and improving the outcomes for people living with cancer."

Professor Newton said he was eager to advocate for the medical advancements being made across Western Australia and has welcomed the appointment of a record number of new Fellows from Western Australia.
