Casper Avenant has always been fascinated with marine conservation. He quit his job as a project manager at a coal fired power station in South Africa to embark on a PhD at Edith Cowan University.
His research has assessed predation rates of sea turtle eggs and hatchlings of loggerhead turtles along the Ningaloo coast, and flatback turtles on the Pilbara coast, by predators, like host crabs and silver gulls.
With his supervisor, ECU's Professor Glenn Hyndes, he devised a range of methods including start and end of season nest inventories, observing nesting sites with infrared videography, and lab testing. What they found was, that due to either egg or hatchling predation, most turtles were not even making it to the ocean.
Casper's research findings are likely to improve management of one of Australia's most endangered species.
Australian author Tim Winton featured Casper's research in the ABC documentary series, Ningaloo Nyinggulu.
