Research and exercise can change lives

That's right. Research and exercise. They've combined right here at ECU.  The PhD project is led by researcher Jin-Soo Kim and supervised by Professor Rob Newton.

Man on exercise bike The work could have far wider impact for other cancer sufferers.

A formidable team. With formidable results.

A PhD project led by researcher Jin-Soo Kim and supervised by Professor Rob Newton at Edith Cowan University has shown that exercise causes muscles to secrete proteins called myokines into our blood that can suppress cancer growth. What's more, the team believes it can help actively fight off cancer cells.

Clinical trials saw prostate cancer patients undergo regular exercise training for 12 and 24 weeks, with bloods taken before and after – leading to the breakthrough.  While the research is already seeing huge potential for prostate cancer treatment – Professor Newton said the work could have far wider impact for other cancer sufferers.

Do you have a research dream?

This research wouldn't have been possible without Jin-Soo undertaking his PhD by research. So maybe it's time for you to consider a Higher Degree by Research course where you may find the next amazing breakthrough.

A Higher Degree by Research allows you to pursue in-depth, independent research in your chosen field that will not only deepen your knowledge but will allow you to develop valuable research skills along the way.

At ECU, a Higher Degree by Research is offered in the form of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Research. These programs involve a substantial research project under the direct and guided supervision of an experienced and supportive ECU staff member or research team.

Many Higher Degree by Research candidates conduct their research in direct collaboration and often co-supervised by industry partners, ensuring a hands-on experience within the industry along the way.

What will it lead to?

Employment, absolutely yes.

But it goes further than that. ECU's Postgrad programs also lead to academic positions, and research roles in industry and government.

HDR graduates have unique and highly regarded skills that are important to and can be applied across all sectors.

Is it expensive?

ECU has a range of scholarship schemes that may support both tuition fees and provide a living allowance for HDR students while they study, including those co-funded by industry or business partners.

Getting started. It's simple.

So, your heart is set on a specific field of research then it's time to speak with potential supervisors to discuss your options.
