Kaidyn's first taste of engineering leaves first class impressions

Kaidyn McLennan's interest in engineering was sparked building Lego and remote-controlled cars with his dad. His first semester of uni gave him a huge sample of engineering fields to help him decide his future.

Group of university students First year engineering students are given a broad knowledge of all the different paths in engineering at Edith Cowan University.

Kaidyn recently started his first year of engineering for a four-year course.

Asked about the first year so far, he says, "I'm very happy with how it’s gone. It's been great to get a broad knowledge of all the different paths in engineering.

"I have really enjoyed the electrical engineering units, and it's helped me confirm that I am on the right path."

That path is now likely to be a degree in electrical and renewable energy, a smart choice in the current global climate.

Making the transition from year 12

Kaidyn says he was surprised by how easy it had been to transition from Year 12 to university.

"It's a different learning style; more free-thinking and critical thinking," he says of uni.

He also likes that he's not on campus all the time.

"I'm on campus for classes and to study, but I have time to work and have a social life outside my studies.

There is a lot of course work, but if you focus in class and are organised it's easy to handle all of it," says Kaidyn.

He's also discovered there is a lot of group work at uni.

"I've had the opportunity to work on my collaboration skills. It’s been valuable, and I have enjoyed it more than I thought I would," he says.

Kaidyn has also been impressed by the level of support available, both before and during studies.

"The course coordinators have been awesome to work with."

Hands on from Year 1

Even in his first year, Kaidyn has been surprised that so much of the work is hands-on and practical.

"I get to create projects which is then recorded in PebblePad," he says.

This will give him a portfolio of work he can show prospective employers.

"It's been cool using industry standard equipment as part of my studies. I’m really excited to use the maker space labs in my future units!"

"I have also signed up for the 3D printing lab, and I am looking forward to using it in some projects soon," says Kaidyn.

The best choice of uni for Engineering?

"I highly recommend ECU over all other unis. You know what is expected of you. The courses are well thought out," says Kaidyn.

"There is a specific engineering school here too, so everything feels structured.

"It feels like there is a real focus on engineering at ECU and that it's important to the university."
