Environmental and Spatial Design Major

This major deals with the design of interior and exterior environments and spaces, applying sustainable practices to the design of retail and commercial spaces, or the design of products and environments that promote usability. Design is a collaborative discipline and students work in teams and individually to find and solve design problems. Students learn and develop skills that suit them for work in both the professional design industry and within organisations that employ design thinking. Design is seen as part of a whole system, and the major focuses on sustainable design practices that consider environmental, social, cultural and economic needs.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate initiative, planning, and problem solving skills in the interpretation of a wide range of design requirements, management, and the development of spatial design projects to satisfy client demand.
  2. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for self-learning by researching solutions to issues that are encountered during all processes related to the production of environmental and spatial design projects.
  3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement in the context of industry relevant projects to identify and solve problems related to the analysis and accommodation of design considerations and requirements, technical skills, and the medium of delivery.
  4. Integrate theoretical, historical, and technical knowledge in depth of the materials, construction techniques, and manufacturing processes used in the design of environments and interior spaces with consideration to sustainability and universal design.
  5. Interpret, communicate and present ideas, problems and arguments related to the design of three dimensional objects and environments using a variety of mediums in accordance with industry demands.
  6. Review, analyse, and synthesise knowledge of materials, techniques, concepts, and tasks to create and produce 3D spatial designs.
