Media and Cultural Studies Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2024 : Code MAAAJT

This major is at the leading edge of understanding media and contemporary life. It prepares students for future success in traversing our media-driven environment. Studying this major equips students with the ability to ask meaningful questions about issues such as the power and influence of traditional media, the complexities and contradictions of social media and the ubiquity of popular culture. Particularly the focus is on the politics of representation. Students will be introduced to contemporary theoretical ideas in relation to identity and society, and gain a cross-cultural and international outlook, which aims to develop research depth, civic engagement and critical inquiry. It connects with our community and the world by engaging students in current social and cultural issues. Students develop a set of critical thinking and analytical skills along with an ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
