Unit Set Information

Biological Science Education Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2019 : Code MABUTU

This major addresses key biological science understandings, and provides the extended content knowledge needed to address the demands and opportunities of the secondary school biological science curriculum. Emphasis is given to inquiry-based practical work, demonstrations, co-operative group work, whole class discussions and use of information communication technology, to ensure effective learning and teaching practices in secondary science. Planning, teaching, and assessment strategies are developed within a range of science content areas.

Special Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to demonstrate satisfactory performance in Biology ATAR or Chemistry ATAR or Human Biology ATAR or Earth and Environmental Science ATAR or Integrated Science ATAR or Physics ATAR, with equivalents considered.

Learning Outcomes

1. Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in biological science.
2. Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
3. Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
4. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of biological science and the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for biological science teaching in secondary education.
5. Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in biological science.
6. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement biological science programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
7. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of biological science teaching.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching general science in lower secondary school and to take a specialist role in biological science courses in upper secondary school (Years 11 and 12).

Major Structure

Students are required to complete 10 Content units and 2 Curriculum units. Content units educate students in the subject area and the Curriculum units explain how to teach the subject area to others.

* Students will be assessed to see if they have achieved the ECU minimum standard of English language proficiency in this unit. Students who don't meet the minimum standard will be provided with appropriate English language support and development.
