Unit Set Information

Children and Young People's Nursing Specialisation

This program enables nurses employed in a children and young people's health care setting to complete a qualification to master's level within their chosen discipline. Nurses working in any area of children and young people's nursing are encouraged to enrol in this program where all aspects of caring for children and young people will be covered.

Learning Within Existing Workplace Requirement

Students are required to be employed where children and young people are cared for, for a minimum of 18 hours per week. Students are required to nominate a clinical facilitator to support them in the clinical setting and will be required to demonstrate their competency in accordance with the advanced practice standards of their related professional organisation. Students will also be required to provide an agreement of support from their employer to undertake the program.

Attendance requirements

Students are required to be working at least 18 hours per week where children and young people are cared for.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply and model communication and collaboration skills to analyse and design innovative contributions to professional practice.
  2. Apply cognitive and creative analytical skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic children and young people's clinical situations.
  3. Reflect critically on a complex body of children and young people's nursing knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of children and young people's nursing practice.
  4. Use high level self-management skills to initiate, plan and execute a substantial research-based project.

Employment Opportunities

Students are in a paid employment model to undertake this program and will therefore already be employed in a CYP setting. Undertaking this program will however, enhance their career advancement opportunities within the area of CYP health care.
