Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner)

This cross-institutional course enables the student to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills as a component of their application to apply for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Developed in conjunction with Flinders University, South Australia, part one of the program enables the student to enhance their individual knowledge and skills whilst working in their selected area of specialisation and then, through the second part of the program, to acquire the theoretical knowledge and skills required of a Nurse Practitioner in a specialist nurse or extended practice role. Due to the co-delivery of this course with Flinders University and associated University policy, advanced standing cannot be provided for units delivered by Edith Cowan University.

Learning Within Existing Workplace Requirement

Students are required to complete two practicum units within the course.

Attendance requirements

Students are required to be employed for a minimum of 20 hours per week in their specialty area.

Implications of failing

Students are required to pass both of the practicum units as a component of the course.

Registration

Students will need to graduate to be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is required to practice in the profession.

Admission requirements

  • Into a 120 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree; or
  • Into a 240 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All students are required to provide proof of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and supply a letter of support from their employer detailing evidence of a minimum of 20 hours employment per week in clinical specialty and confirming a minimum of one year full time or equivalent at Advanced Practice level in specialty, and have a postgraduate qualification in the appropriate specialty area, and have five years full-time post-registration experience, of which three years must be in the chosen specialty area along with evidence of the professional associations' membership and ongoing contribution to the profession, and completed Clinical Facilitator details form.

Note: The Flinders University units are 20 credit points except for NURS9017 Extended Nursing Practice which is a 40 credit point unit.
