Internship Requirement

In this course, students will complete one year of supported professional practice in a work setting. This is typically structured as a minimum of 44 weeks of work on a full-time basis but working arrangements may vary on an individual basis. This one year period of professional practice aims to develop a range of non-technical skills and attributes, as well as enhance student understanding of professional conduct, the realities of working and the different career options available to them in their chosen field. It will help develop the skills required to interact effectively with other professionals and to contribute to the workplace. It will also develop student understanding of corporate social responsibility and business ethics in a global context. The practicum units can only be attempted once and failure in any of the four units will result in the student being awarded the Bachelor of Commerce and not the Bachelor of Commerce Professional.

Duty of care

Students undertaking the Professional Practice program may be required to provide police clearances, working with children checks, health screenings, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), first aid certificates or evidence of health screenings and/or immunisations before they can undertake the program. Students will be required to complete pre-placement modules and also participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing the Professional Practice program, including documentation and risk management compliance.

Attendance requirements

Students will be required to complete pre-placement modules and also participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing the Professional Practice program, including documentation and risk management compliance. Students will need to maintain regular email contact and attend meetings with the Unit Coordinator/Lecturer as required. These meetings may take place on-campus or at the host organisation's site. For students not based in the Perth metropolitan area, meetings may be conducted by telephone or other electronic means. Students may be required to work shift and/or weekend work as a result of the host organisation's staffing arrangements

Professional practice rules

Students will be required to read and follow the WIL Guidelines for Students, and other relevant documentation, and complete pre-placement modules prior to commencing the Professional Practice Program. These, in combination, clearly outline the expected standards of behaviour and professional conduct during the one year in industry.

Implications of failing

The practicum units can only be attempted once and failure will result in the student being awarded the Bachelor of Commerce and not the Bachelor of Commerce Professional.
