Special Education Specialisation

This specialisation provides an opportunity for motivated professionals to extend their knowledge and skills to provide research informed strategies and practices for students who have diverse abilities.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge in the theories, pedagogical practices and strategies for students with special needs (1)
  2. Demonstrate specialised knowledge in the policies principles, ethics and legislative requirements for teaching students with special needs. (1)
  3. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from varying indigenous and cultural backgrounds. (1)
  4. Review, critically analyse and synthesise the principles of effective instructional design to enhance teaching approaches. (3)
  5. Exercise critical thinking and judgment to identify complex issues within the teaching and learning cycle through which current practices are examined, outcomes reviewed and new ideas generated. (2,4)
  6. Demonstrate specialised technical, trans literacy and creative skills to maintain an engaging, inclusive learning environment that promotes children's well-being and progression in learning for students with special needs. (5,11,14)
  7. Research, analyse, evaluate and communicate the theoretical concepts and methods used for effective learning and teaching in special education. (6)
  8. Use multiple forms of communication (verbal, non-verbal, written and ICT) to convey complex knowledge and ideas for successful teaching and learning and to engage and share information with families, colleagues and community stakeholders.(7,14)
  9. Embed sustainable practices and highlight responsibilities for a sustainable future and our shared connections as global citizens. (13,16)
  10. Adapt specialised knowledge and skills making independent judgments to design, implement and evaluate innovative curriculum to suit the learning and teaching context and optimise inclusivity for those with special needs.(8,9,14)
  11. Demonstrate creativity and personal autonomy adapting assessment and reporting processes,then critically reflect on personal practice using accreditation standards to enhance professional practice. (9,10,14)
  12. Work collaboratively with colleagues to evaluate and improve teaching approaches as part of ongoing professional development. (12)
