Tourism and Hospitality Management Major

Global tourism and hospitality employers look for university graduates who possess the analytical, practical and employability skills needed for managerial positions. This major equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed as a business professional and industry leader in contemporary tourism or hospitality organisations. This major covers the key aspects required for managing diverse tourism and hospitality businesses including marketing, planning and development, ecotourism, special interest tourism and strategic management. Students also choose specialised electives such as event management and cruise ship tourism to suit their needs and interests. Course Exclusion: This major cannot be studied under the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Collaborate in team settings to produce measurable outcomes and evaluate team processes in a business environment.
  2. Communicate and convey tourism knowledge, advice and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats, using relevant levels of technology and transliteracy proficiency.
  3. Demonstrate in depth, broad and coherent knowledge of the theories, underlying principles, concepts and techniques in tourism and hospitality management as a basis for independent lifelong learning.
  4. Demonstrate initiative and judgement to identify, plan, make decisions and solve tourism and hospitality management problems.
  5. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to recommend appropriate solutions to solve unpredictable and sometimes complex tourism and hospitality management problems and issues using social, ethical, legal, economic, regulatory and global perspectives.
  6. Obtain, analyse and interpret tourism and hospitality management information applying an international perspective to create, manage or adapt innovative ideas, concepts and techniques.
  7. Reflect on and evaluate personal practices and performance feedback to identify opportunities for learning in the context of employment and life.
  8. Review, analyse and synthesise theoretical and applied technical knowledge of the fundamentals of the tourism and hospitality industries including, planning, visitor management, marketing, research methods and niche tourism.
