What if I experience family or domestic violence?

If you experience family and domestic violence, and feel safe to do so, you may wish to consider the below steps:

Get immediate help

  • On or off campus: phone 000 for police and/or ambulance
  • On campus: phone (08) 6304 3333 for ECU Security.

Consider your personal safety

  • Make a safety plan – find more information and a safety plan checklist at 1800RESPECT
  • Have easy access to the phone numbers you need – program emergency numbers and support people into your phone
  • Learn strategies to stay safe while online – check out these tips for online safety
  • Keep money and important documents in a safe and easy to access place – check out this escape bag checklist.

Access support and resources

Talk to trusted friends, family, University staff or support services. Regardless of your circumstance, there is always help available. You can seek advice, support and assistance through the University or get information and referrals for relevant external support services.

Record and report the behaviour

Keep records of incidences and behaviours so that if and when you choose to report, you are well prepared. If you wish to you can report to:

  • WA Police on 000 (emergency or life-threatening situation)
  • WA Police on 131 444 (non-emergency call)
  • 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732

Leaving an abusive relationship

No-one ever invites, asks for or deserves to experience abuse or violence of any kind. It can be extremely difficult and dangerous to leave an abusive relationship for many reasons. If, and when, you decide to leave, just know that judgement free support is available.

We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Noongar people, the traditional custodians of the land upon which ECU's campuses stand and programs operate.
