Overview

Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a trusted, mission-aligned partner supporting Australia’s sovereign capability priorities through applied research, workforce development and industry collaboration. ECU’s Defence engagement combines strengths in cyber security, engineering, advanced manufacturing, maritime and undersea systems, human performance, health sciences and secure digital technologies to deliver practical, real-world outcomes for Defence and Defence Industry.

With strong Western Australian partnerships and a coordinated whole-of-university approach, ECU translates research into operational capability, supporting Defence preparedness, resilience and future workforce needs.

About

ECU supports Defence and Defence Industry through:

  • Applied, mission-aligned research focused on operational and sovereign capability outcomes;
  • Strong engagement with Defence, government, industry primes, SMEs and strategic partners;
  • Research translation, prototyping and innovation aligned to Defence capability priorities;
  • Development of Defence-ready workforce pathways, including graduate, postgraduate education and industry-embedded learning;
  • Secure, multidisciplinary collaboration; and
  • Veteran-focused education and transition initiatives supporting pathways into future careers.

ECU’s integrated approach enables the university to work effectively across research, training and industry engagement, positioning ECU as a trusted Defence partner rather than a purely academic contributor.

Programs

ECU delivers Defence capability outcomes across four key focus areas:

  • Cyber Security & Information Warfare
    • Secure digital systems, cyber resilience, AI-enabled decision support, critical infrastructure security and Defence cyber training.
  • Maritime & Undersea Systems
    • Maritime autonomy, undersea communications, sensing technologies, human-machine teaming and resilient maritime systems.
  • Engineering, Manufacturing & Emerging Technologies
    • Advanced and additive manufacturing, robotics, autonomy, systems integration, materials performance and sustainment technologies.
  • Human Performance, Health & Workforce Resilience
    • Operational readiness, simulation and VR-enabled training, injury prevention, workforce resilience, human-AI teaming and workforce capability development.

Partners

ECU is a member of the Team WA group of universities, that coordinate on Defence and other matters to achieve synergies across the academic sector.

ECU is also a member of key defence, cyber security and industry bodies.
