How can I support someone else?

If someone you know has or is experiencing family and domestic violence, it is important that you, and they, seek professional support. Every circumstance will be different. Some strategies that may help are:

  • Ensuring you can speak is a safe and private place
  • Let them know that they are not alone and support is available
  • Always believe what the person is telling
  • Avoid judgement or criticism for how a person chooses to deal with their circumstance
  • Discuss their safety and what strategies they are going to use to stay safe
  • Refer to appropriate support services and resources
  • Ask them what they need from you to help

If someone is experiencing, or is at risk of, family and domestic violence and/or sexual assault, they can contact 1800RESPECT either online or on 1800 737 732 for counselling, 24 hours a day.

We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Noongar people, the traditional custodians of the land upon which ECU's campuses stand and programs operate.
