Ed Kalajzic

Bachelor of Business (2004)

Winner of the 2021 ECU Distinguished Alumni Award

“I am a very family-focussed, and values-driven person. I fully believe in the power of giving something a try and never having regrets. When I felt the desire to study, my wife and kids gave me all their love and support and we took the leap of faith together.”

With his family’s support, Ed enrolled at ECU and drastically changed his career path, moving from farming to the corporate world.

“It was a big transition as I studied and subsequently accepted my first corporate jobs. However, the practical skills I learnt at ECU set me up for success as I learnt theory as well as practical application in the real world.”

In 2004, Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Business as a mature aged student and has since taken executive leadership roles, including most recently at Western Power and Operations Fortescue Future Industries.

“As a mature-aged student, I had responsibilities that I probably wouldn’t have had if I’d studied sooner. I continued to manage our farm while I completed the first part of my course through online study. The second half of my degree, I completed through on-campus learning. At the same time, I became the primary carer of our two kids and balanced childcare with study, which I absolutely loved.”

“To anyone considering a career change, or with an interest in furthering their education, I strongly encourage you to take the jump. If you have passion for a subject, or burning feeling in your tummy, chase it.

“My experience at ECU was fantastic. The varied study options, such as online or on-campus, were perfect for me and my family as I could juggle commitments and never miss any special moments as my kids grew up.”

Upon graduating, Ed took a position at Price Waterhouse Coopers and has gained experience across various industries including financial, agriculture, State Government and climate change.

Currently leading Priority Projects as the Director of Project Development at Fortescue Future Industries, he is also a non-executive Director of Reconciliation WA, a not-for-profit organisation providing leadership, advocacy and support to people and organisations driving the movement for Reconciliation in Western Australia.

“Climate change and reconciliation are important topics that I have a great deal of passion for. As I move my career along, I’d like to continue to support topics close to my heart through further non-executive roles.”

“During my time at ECU, I built a fantastic network and I really enjoy having an ongoing relationship with the uni. When I was asked to join the School of Business and Law Advisory Board, I jumped at the chance because it is a great way to stay connected, keep learning and be an active supporter of ECU.”

“To anyone considering a career change, or with an interest in furthering their education, I strongly encourage you to take the jump. If you have passion for a subject, or burning feeling in your tummy, chase it. Talk to your support network and find ways around any barriers that are in your way. You will never regret giving something a try.”

“And to anyone with an interest in climate change, consider a career at Fortescue Future Industries. We are leading the world in this area and the passion of the team is infectious.”
