By supporting ECU Smoke-Free policy along with its valuable resources, we hope to play our part in reducing the number of untimely deaths attributed to the use of smoking. Despite many Australians making the decision to quit, tobacco smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death and disease in our community. In Western Australia close to 1,200 people die from smoking-related causes each year (Cancer Council WA 2014).
All ECU campus locations are smoke free, in-line with university policies that aim to provide a healthier clean air environment for all visitors to our campuses. The university’s goal in improving the working environment for its staff, student and visitors is to ensure that the highest occupational safety and health standards are clearly defined and maintained according to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (1984, the Tobacco Products Control Act 2006 and the Tobacco Products Control Regulations 2006 of Western Australia).
With support available, it is hoped that any current smokers will review their own health needs and see this as an opportunity for positive change.
