Elder-in-Residence

Kurongkurl Katitjin facilitates unique cultural support across the University through our Elder-in-Residence for all ECU staff and students. Elders bring a wealth of cultural knowledge and experience to our University community that is beyond measure.

Our current Elder-in-Residence, Dr Roma Yibiyung Winmar is a respected Noongar elder, who passionately advocate for Indigenous education, language, arts, and is an accomplished artist in her own rights. Known by many as Nan Roma, she has extensive language skills and has previously worked as a Noongar language teacher at Western Australia’s Moorditj College.

Nan Roma engages across the University to promote Aboriginal culture and protocols including the delivery of Welcome to Country. She is dedicated to promoting Noongar language and cultural activities for young and old alike and is available for appointments on Mount Lawley and Joondalup Campuses. Nan Roma is on campus three days-a-week and is available to meet with staff and students.
