After graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Richard left his hometown of Sydney and relocated to the remote Kimberley in WA for ten years. Based in Broome, he worked almost exclusively in Aboriginal theatre, music and health promotion. Involvement in large scale productions such as Jimmy Chi and Kuckles' "Bran Nue Dae" and "Corrugation Road" and seven years with the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services' Health Promotions Unit, writing and directing health related education plays, saw Richard traversing the country to cities, regional centers, towns, Aboriginal Communities, schools and prisons and experiencing Aboriginal life and culture in its many diverse forms.
After one further year based in Darwin, Richard relocated to Perth and began his work in tertiary education, firstly as a Disability Support Worker for TAFE, then as a lecturer in Indigenous Health and tutor with the Indigenous Tertiary Enabling Course (ITEC) at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin university, before moving onto Kurongkurl Katitjin at ECU. Richard's son's Aboriginal family are from Wangkatjungka Community (Christmas Creek station) and Kupartiya Community (Bohemia Downs station) located between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek in the east Kimberley.
