Background

Mikayla King is a Kalkadoon woman born and raised on Whadjuk Country of the Noongar Nation. Mikayla has worked in various levels of education over the last decade, in various roles including Aboriginal Islander Education Officer, Classroom Teacher, Acting Deputy Principal and as an Academic. Her experience is in Metropolitan Teaching Program (hard to staff) Western Australian Schools. In addition, she works as a private Aboriginal Education Consultant and is an active member of Early Childhood Australia and Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) First Nations Expert Reference group. Mikayla has been recognised nationally for her work through the following awards:

  • 2019 Midland NAIDOC Education and Arts Person of the Year
  • 2019 Early Childhood Australia Early Career Teacher of the Year
  • 2020 Department of Education Teacher of the Year nomination
  • 2023 Edith Cowan University Young Alumni Commendation

Mikayla is currently completing her PhD, in ARC project Culturally Responsive Schooling and her research interests include: Culturally Responsive pedagogies, curriculum and schooling, Indigenous epistemologies and affect.
