Electronic resources
ECU is an e-preferred Library. You do not need to attend the Library building to access e-resources, simply use ECU Library search to locate the resources you require.
For more information on searching, view the online how-to guide.
Laptops for loan
The Library’s collection includes laptops available for one-month loans to current students during semester.
Due to a high demand for laptops, we have also introduced short term loan laptops to our collections, which will help to reduce wait times. These can be borrowed for up to one week.
It may not be possible to access these items immediately - they work just like other items in our collections. If they’re all out on loan, we’ll need to contact you to collect items once they’ve been returned from their current loan.
Please note that we're currently unable to send laptops outside Western Australia, and we don’t permit this equipment to be taken out of the state.
Laptops are non-renewable. Any requests for re-issuing of loans will be assessed by the Library Coordinator.
In consideration of your access to the laptop and any of its accessories you agree that you will return them in the same condition when directed by the University or pay the cost of their replacement or repair. You are responsible for protecting all items from damage and theft. Failure to return an item or pay the relevant cost may prevent you from accessing your student results, borrowing any further items or graduating from University.
There's more information available about this service at ECU's FAQ page.
Physical resources
To borrow an item, take your selection and ECU ID to any Self Check machine located inside each of the ECU Campus Libraries.
Once you have taken an item out, you can renew your items by logging in to My Account. Follow the prompts to renew items.
Returns
When you've finished with your loan, you can return it to any of the ECU Campus Libraries. After hours return chutes are located near the Library entrances. View the map to see the return chutes exact locations.
Fines
We don't charge overdue fines on Main Collection items. However, if you incur a fine from a lost or damaged item, a loan laptop or a special collection item you can learn more about payments at the FAQ.
Borrowing conditions
*Items move to 'long overdue' status after 10 days. Long overdue items that are billed will be sent to ECU's debt collection agency and include an additional $20 processing charge.
- For items that are damaged, lost, or not returned you will be billed a replacement cost plus a $20 processing charge (per item).
- Laptops, rare or valuable books will be charged the full replacement cost.
- Patrons cannot replace the item with one purchased themselves.
- If an item is lost and paid for, then, subsequently found, the Library will not accept return of the item nor refund any payment.
** Alumni, Reciprocal and Community borrowers are unable to place holds themselves. For assistance, please see enquiry desk staff or contact Library Services.
*** Items with a hold must be returned by the due date or penalties apply.
Note: Library staff may recall items you have on loan, including items required for the High Use Collection and laptops. Recalled items must be returned by the revised due date or penalties will be applied.
Please check your ECU email account regularly to make sure that you receive important information regarding your Library record such as overdue items, holds to pick up, items being recalled and fines.
Borrow from other Australian University Libraries
ECU students and staff can join Curtin, Murdoch, Notre Dame and UWA libraries by registering online with the Western Australian Group of University Librarians (WAGUL) for reciprocal borrowing.
Please ensure you register before you go to their library, and take your ECU ID card with you.
Online registrations are processed Monday to Friday and it may take up to 48 hours for your registration to be active.
If you need immediate registration please register in person at the library you wish to borrow from.
When using another university library please remember to follow the rules of that library.
Document Delivery
Postgraduate students and staff may also be entitled to use our document delivery service. Find more information here.
