Broadly defined, Open Educational Resources (OER) are academic resources with licensing agreements that not only offer free and flexible access for individual use when compared with traditional publishing, but also allow other educators to adapt the materials for use in their units.
They include the following, and more:
The OER Collective is an initiative of Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL).
It facilitates independent publishing by authors at its member institutions, and cross-institutional publishing.
In 2023, ECU has become a participating institution which will lead to new opportunities in academic publishing.
Ready to write your next textbook, or interested in adapting existing openly licenced material?
Expressions of interest (EOI) for 2023 OER Collective DIY Open Textbook Grants are now open.
The grant guidelines, EOI form and submission link are available from the OER Collective website (linked below).
Please note: A section of the EOI must be completed by the lead author’s institution’s key contact for the OER Collective. For ECU, this is Associate University Librarian Dr Nicole Johnston.

You don’t need a grant to publish! If you have a general interest in publishing an open textbook and would like to know more about the process for publishing a textbook on the Pressbooks platform, Dr Nicole Johnston is available for discussions.

ECU Library hosts an online guide collating contextual information and links to free and adaptable teaching resources.
The guide helps to define exactly what OERs and Digital Rights Management-free (DRM) resources are, how they differ, and how to evaluate them.
In addition, it supports you to:
