ECU Library has contributed to the latest CAUL OER Collective publication, Legal Research Skills: An Australian Law Guide, published on 15 January 2025.

Developed collaboratively by universities across Australia, the guide is designed to support students in developing essential legal research skills and navigating the complexities of Australian law effectively.

This resource is divided into five sections, covering key aspects of legal research. It introduces foundational research skills, explains how to locate and evaluate case law, and guides students through legislative research and statutory interpretation. It also highlights the importance of secondary sources and includes a dedicated section on the responsible use of generative AI for legal research.

ECU’s Law Librarian, Kate Strong, contributed two chapters to this edition: Finding Western Australian Legislation and Legal Research Using Generative AI.

The text is published under a Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC 4.0), allowing it to be freely adopted or adapted by Australian universities, law schools, and libraries. The 2025 edition expands on the 2024 version and will be updated regularly to reflect ongoing developments.

Access the guide online on the OER Collective website.
