Following the success of the Read & Publish (R&P) agreements in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the ECU Library is pleased to announce that the New and Returning Read & Publish Agreements for 2025 are now live. These agreements enable ECU researchers to publish Open Access in selected journals without paying Article Processing Charges (APCs).

Impact of Read & Publish Agreements

In 2024, the R&P agreements supported the Open Access publication of approximately 426 papers by ECU researchers, saving an estimated AUD$1.9M in APC fees. This significantly boosted research accessibility and impact.

The Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) and ECU Library continue to champion Open Access and seek new agreements that maximize benefits for researchers.

What’s New in 2025?

ECU authors now have access to 10,000+ nominated journal titles across multiple publishers, all waiving APCs for Open Access publication.

New Publishers in 2025:

  • Emerald Publishing
  • BMJ Group

Returning Publishers:

  • The American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
  • The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
  • Cambridge University Press
  • CSIRO Publishing
  • Oxford University Press
  • Springer Publishing
  • Wiley Publishing
  • The Company of Biologists
  • Taylor and Francis
  • Sage Publishing
  • Elsevier Publishing

Agreement Dashboard

The ECU Library has created a library guide to help authors identify eligible, high-ranking journals: A Research Companion – Read & Publish Agreements

The dashboard allows authors to filter by Field of Research (FoR) code, FoR description or Journal Title to check eligibility, view Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) and access journal websites (if available).

Key things to know

  • Article Allowance Caps: Article Allowance Caps – Some agreements have limits. If exceeded, APCs may apply, or articles may be published behind a paywall. The Library will monitor usage and provide updates.
  • Eligibility – The corresponding author must be affiliated with ECU.
  • Use Your ECU Email: Use your ECU email (@ecu.edu.au or @our.ecu.edu.au) to confirm eligibility.
  • NHMRC Compliance: Publishing under an R&P agreement complies with NHMRC requirements.
