Being agile

The Western Australian State of Emergency declaration for COVID-19 ended last year on 4 November 2022, which saw an end to many of the COVID-19 restrictions and mandatory vaccinations. As COVID-19 is still amongst us, ECU will continue to support staff and students with information on COVID-19 in the event of any mandated changes.

ECU is committed to providing a COVID-safe study and work environment on all of our campuses. We will also continue to deliver the best educational experience for students, keeping in mind that we need to be agile in our response to changes.

Staff Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Advice for all staff

  • From Friday, 14 October 2022, Australia’s mandatory isolation periods for people who test positive to COVID-19 were removed.
  • The WA Government has confirmed that anyone who tests positive to COVID-19 is no longer required to isolate for five days.
  • However, staff who are unwell are strongly encouraged to stay home and focus on their health care and recovery, therefore the following leave options would apply:
    • Personal Leave (includes sick and carer’s). If leave is exhausted or the employee has insufficient leave, then;
    • Other forms of leave including Annual Leave, or Long Service Leave. If leave is exhausted or the employee has insufficient leave, then;
    • Leave Without Pay.
  • If a leave option is required, the staff member is responsible for making the leave booking through Staff Kiosk or via the COVID-19 Leave application form.

  • If you are displaying symptoms of COVID-19 it is recommended you get tested. Should you test positive to COVID-19 and are unwell, you are strongly encouraged to stay home.

Vaccination advice

No. In line with WA Government requirements you are not required to show proof of vaccination at ECU.

COVID-19 workplace vaccination requirements will apply to you if your duties or place of work are affected by the WA Department of Health’s mandatory vaccination policy.

At ECU, this includes, but is not limited to, staff, contractors or volunteers working in the premises/locations or roles outlined in this guide.

In addition, third parties that ECU engages with may require staff, contractors or volunteers to be vaccinated in accordance with their own requirements and mandated policies. It is recommended that you check with third parties regarding their vaccination requirements if you are unsure of the relevant requirements.

If you fall under any relevant health direction because of your employment at ECU, ECU will ask you to provide evidence of your vaccination status, including booster vaccinations and any applicable exemptions.

Western Australian workers who fall under the mandatory vaccination policy are required to be triple dose vaccinated.

If you are required to supply your vaccination status evidence to ECU, you are required to supply your third vaccination dose evidence to ECU when this becomes available.

If you have a medical concern related to COVID-19 vaccination you should discuss your concerns with your General Practitioner and Line Manager. Further assistance can be provided by your HR Business Partner.

Medical exemptions can be emailed to payroll@ecu.edu.au. Before submitting your evidence, please remove or redact your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI).

Payroll will record the COVID-19 medical exemption within the Payroll system. By submitting your exemption, you agree that ECU may disclose evidence of your exemption to third parties, where it is required in relation to your employment or research activities, or required by law.

If you decline to be vaccinated against COVID-19, do not have a medical or temporary exemption, and this is likely to affect your role with ECU, this should be discussed with your Line Manager and HR Business Partner.

Staff Health and Wellbeing

Nurturing your health and wellbeing during these difficult times is imperative in helping you fulfil your role and responsibility as an ECU staff member. The analogy of putting on your own oxygen mask first is a good one, as you can only take care of others if you are well yourself.

All ECU staff have access to free confidential counselling for themselves and immediate family. You can also access a wealth of health information on ECU’s Living with COVID-19 intranet page.
