Research and Research Register

Research opportunities for ECU staff and students are key drivers for ECU’s investment in the ECU Health Centres at Wanneroo and Yanchep. Our goal is for the ECU Health Centres to produce research which benefits their local communities, and contributes to better health and wellbeing.

The ECU Health Centres offer unique opportunities for collaborative research, and we invite expressions of interest from other universities, stakeholders, government, and health providers to partner with ECU. Researchers interested in working together with the services at the ECU Health Centres are encouraged to contact the Project Coordinator, ECU Health Centre.

ECU researchers who are interested in conducting research projects at the ECU Health Centres Wanneroo and Yanchep should read the Clinic Space and Research Guidelines before completing an ECU Clinic Space and Research Application form, prior to any contact with staff or patients at the ECU Health Centres.

Research Register

Health research is critical to finding out the causes and solutions to Australia’s health and wellbeing challenges, and often needs community involvement. Research conducted at the ECU Health Centres in Yanchep and Wanneroo can involve recruiting people – clients, patients, carers, visitors – to participate in research studies.

The ECU Health Centre Research Register is a database of people who agree to receive information about research projects which match their areas of interest. The aim is to make it easier, faster and simpler for our clients, patients, and community members to contribute to research which is relevant to them, and for researchers to connect with the right people.

By completing the Research Register form, you're consenting to being contacted in future about research projects. We use the information you provide to see whether any ECU research projects are relevant to you and your areas of interest. You will be sent information about the research study, and it is completely up to you to decide if you want to participate.

The Research Register is open to all adults aged 18 and over. You might be sent information about more than one research project, but we’ll limit invitations to a maximum of four a year. You’ll only receive information about projects which match your areas of interest.

Only research projects which have received approval from ECU’s Human Research Ethics Committee are allowed to be conducted at the ECU Health Centre. More information on our approach to conducting ethical research is available on the Research Ethics and Integrity page.

Privacy, confidentiality and security

The privacy of your personal information is very important for us. The only personal information collected on the form is your name, a contact method (mobile or email), your age group, and your areas of interest in health. This information is stored in ECU’s secure records system, and access is limited to a small group of senior staff who are responsible for managing the database and maintaining data security.

Your information will be stored securely for seven years and then deleted, in line with WA’s legal requirements about records storage. The Research Register is subject to ECU policies on privacy, confidentiality, and data security, available through the Legislation, Policy and Governance Documents Directory.

Your information will only be used for the purpose of the Research Register, and won’t be disclosed to anyone else (except as required by law). The initial contact you’ll receive will be from the ECU Health Centre Project Coordinator who will send information about relevant research projects. After that, it is completely up to you to decide if you want to participate in a research project. ECU researchers do not have direct access to your information and are not able to contact you directly, unless you accept the invitation to participate in their specific research project.

Opt-out

You can request at any time to opt-out of the Research Register if you change your mind about being involved. We’ll delete your information and send you an email confirming that we’ve done so.

You can opt-out by emailing or phoning the Project Coordinator:

The Research Register makes it easier for researchers to connect with interested people who have provided information about their areas of interest. The Research Register is particularly suited for research in public and primary health, chronic disease management, mental health, social justice, aged care, nursing, social work, and allied health. The Research Register recruits participants from across the northern suburbs. ECU staff and students are welcome to sign up to the Register.

How does it work

Researchers wishing to use the Research Register for participant and/or health consumer recruitment need to complete the ECU Clinic Space and Research Application form, available as a download from the ECU Health Centre Research page. Once approved, researchers work with the ECU Health Centre Project Team to identify relevant groups on the Register whose interest areas match the research study. Researchers provide an invitation and participant information which the Project Team sends to participants.

At no time do researchers have direct access to people on the Register. The decision to accept invitations to participate in research studies is at the sole discretion of the individual.
