In September the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) celebrated a significant moment with the presentation of the prestigious Bill Warnock Award following a matinee performance of Legally Blonde.
This year's award was presented to Anabel Jamieson, marking the 23rd year of this cherished recognition for outstanding Musical Theatre students.
The Warnock Family—represented by Diana, Kylie, and Adam Warnock—was invited onstage to present the award to Anabel.
The award, affectionately known as the 'Golden Billy,' was established in 2001 in memory of the late Bill Warnock, a playwright with a vision of Perth as a thriving hub of arts and culture.
It has become one of WAAPA's longest-standing and most anticipated accolades, recognising the talent, discipline, and dedication of second-year Musical Theatre students who show promise for a successful career in the competitive performing arts industry.
During the award ceremony, WAAPA took the opportunity to express its gratitude to the Warnock Family for their ongoing support and generosity.
Last year, the family made the significant decision to establish the award in perpetuity, ensuring that the legacy of Bill Warnock and the ‘Golden Billy’ will continue to inspire future generations of WAAPA students.
"As WAAPA prepares to move to the historic City Campus in 2025, Bill Warnock’s vision for Perth as a city of great arts and culture is becoming a reality," Craig Dalton, Coordinator of Musical Theatre said during the presentation. "We are truly delighted that the Golden Billy will be a permanent part of our future.”
If you are interested in giving a prize to help encourage and support our students, we'd love to hear from you.
