Bachelor of Science (Sports Science and Football)

This course is specifically designed for students who wish to apply their exercise and sports science skills to the game of football. Students can specialise in Football (Soccer) or in Australian Rules Football (AFL). The course comprises exercise and sports science units, as well as specialised football units that provide practical skills and theoretical knowledge to enable students to coach the game of football, test and analyse football players both in the laboratory and on the field, design and implement strength and conditioning programs specific to football, analyse game performance, manage player injuries and lead and manage players.

Practicum Requirement

Students undertake a structured and supervised vocational experience, where they have the opportunity to experience first hand the reality of the workplace, utilise the skills and knowledge gained in their course and enhance their understanding of future career opportunities in their chosen field. Students are required to complete 2 mandatory practicum units as part of their course. Mandatory: SPS3112 (140 hours), SPS2524 Exercise Delivery (30 hours).

Duty of care

Students are required to provide documents such as police clearances, health screenings, first aid certificates or evidence of health screenings and/or immunisations before they can undertake practicum.

Attendance requirements

SPS3112: Students undertake 140 hours of industry practice outside of class time. Hours can be completed over a full year. SPS2524: Students will be required to attend all in-class activities and 30 hours of practicum to be able to pass the unit.

The practicum is part of the following unit: SPS3112 and SPS2524.

Professional practice rules

Students will be advised about relevant professional practice rules when they undertake SPS3112.

Implications of failing

Can not pass the SPS3112 unit.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 3)

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English Language requirement (Band 3)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test;
  • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.
