Australia Awards Scholarships

The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships funded by the Australian Government that aim to contribute to the long-term development needs of Australia's partner countries, in line with global, bilateral and regional agreements. The Australia Awards are a whole-of-government initiative bringing together scholarships administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), offering the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia.

Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training; The following benefits generally apply:

  • full tuition fees
  • return air travel–payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • establishment allowance–a once only payment as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department.
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP)–a compulsory program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on living and studying in Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)–provided to cover the scholar's basic medical costs (with the exception of pre-existing conditions)
  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees–if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
  • supplementary academic support may be available to ensure a scholar's academic success or enhance their academic experience
  • fieldwork (for research awards and Masters by coursework which have a research component where fieldwork is compulsory) may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

The handbook provides information including general eligibility requirements, selection processes, entitlements and responsibilities. Note that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade may revise and update the handbook at any time without notice.

Eligibility Guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be a citizen of a participating country;
  • be an international student (not an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or New Zealand Citizen);
  • study onshore at ECU Joondalup, ECU Mount Lawley, ECU City Campus or ECU South West (Bunbury) Campus;
  • meet ECU’s entry requirements for the course and commence study onshore, in an eligible degree at ECU, Western Australia;
  • meet the eligibility criteria as set out in the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook;
  • apply for a course that is listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS), which is the official Australian Government website that lists all Australian education providers that offer courses to people studying in Australia on student visas;
  • refer to the relevant Country or Regional Profile or check with the nearest DFAT office (or the Managing Contractor’s office) to find out what courses are supported by an Australia Award. For example, some Program Areas do not provide scholarships for undergraduate or PhD studies.

Selection Criteria

  • Scholarship applicants are not required to have an offer of place at an Australian institution when they apply. However, applicants must have researched their preferred courses, including information provided on institution websites, and ensure that it is included on the CRICOS Register;
  • Applicants must include their course and institution preferences when submitting their application for a scholarship

Terms and Conditions

  • Applicants who want to accept an Australia Awards Scholarship will need to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia declaring that they will comply with the conditions of the scholarship.
  • Scholars are required to leave Australia for a minimum of two years after completing their scholarship. Failure to do so will result in the scholar incurring a debt for the total accrued cost of their scholarship.
  • Australia Awards are not available for training in areas related to flying aircraft (but Aviation Management available), nuclear technology or military training.
