- Our Food Environments Team, situated within ECU’s Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute, is at the forefront of pioneering research aimed at understanding the influence of community environments on dietary habits and the risk of overweight and obesity. We are dedicated to creating healthy community, school, and consumer food environments by ensuring equitable access, availability, and affordability of healthier foods and beverages. Our mission extends to reducing the availability and marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages in the places where children live, play, eat, and go to school.
- Through collaborative efforts with State and Local Governments, key health agencies, urban planners, and urban designers, our research provides essential evidence supporting policy and practice changes. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate equitable, health-promoting communities that encourage healthy eating habits.
- In Western Australia, excess bodyweight and poor diet are leading risk factors for premature deaths, and few people eat according to the recommendations of government dietary guidelines.
- Stage 5 of the Public Health Act 2016 will come into effect in June 2024, and local governments will be required to create local public health plans by June 2026, so many are now considering food and nutrition policies as part of their WA public health planning process.
- The aim of this PhD is to investigate and implement the support needed for food and nutrition policies to be introduced into local government public health plans, and conduct process evaluations.
- The successful applicant will receive a fee-offset scholarship and a stipend scholarship of $33,000 per year for a maximum of 3.5 years depending on compliance with milestone and candidacy requirements.
