The Forrest Research Foundation is offering a prestigious scholarship package in 2025 to outstanding researchers from around the world to conduct paradigm-shifting research based at any of Western Australia’s five universities.

Forrest Scholarships are open to international and domestic students intending on enrolling in a PhD at a Western Australian university.

The Forrest Research Foundation provides Forrest PhD Scholars with generous financial support, mentoring and professional development opportunities to help them accelerate their career and go further than they imagined possible.

Eligibility guidelines

Forrest PhD Scholarships are offered to candidates who have exceptional academic profiles, a commitment to engagement and impact, and who have the desire, drive and imagination to undertake doctoral research of the highest standard.

To be eligible to apply for a Forrest Research Foundation Scholarship, an applicant must have:

  • academic excellence and achievement;
  • exceptional ability, resourcefulness and resilience;
  • attained the English language admission standards of their chosen university prior to submitting their application;
  • ability to communicate your research and engage with your chosen community;
  • originality and significance of proposed research;
  • desire to use research to have a positive impact on Western Australia and the wider world

Assessment criteria

  • The duration of Forrest PhD Scholarships is up to 4 years, conditional on satisfactory progress.
    Forrest Scholars are expected to reside in an apartment in Forrest Hall (exemptions may be considered in special circumstances in accordance with the Scholarship Conditions).
    While the Foundation has no pre-existing research themes, occasionally we do identify areas to prioritise.
  • Applicants must submit an application for the Doctor of Philosophy at whichever Western Australian university they are hoping to complete their PhD.

Value

Each Forrest Scholar receives a scholarship package that includes fees, a stipend and accommodation at Forrest Hall in a luxury self-contained studio apartment. This scholarship package is valued at over AU$270,000 over a four-year period including:

  • Research Training Program Stipend or equivalent university postgraduate research scholarship stipend valued at between $32,192 - $37,000 per annum in 2024 and indexed annually.
  • Accommodation Allowance valued at $24,128 in 2024 (subject to annual indexation)
  • Relocation and Research Travel Allowance up to $12,000, plus economy airfare to Perth.
  • International/Domestic Research Training Program Fees Offset Scholarship

Partner Universities

Candidates must undertake research at one of the five Western Australian based universities:

  • Edith Cowan University
  • The University of Western Australia
  • Curtin University
  • Murdoch University
  • The University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle Campus)

About Forrest Research Foundation

Forrest Research Foundation was established in 2014 following one of the largest ever philanthropic donations in Australian history by Andrew and Nicola Forrest. The donation is used to drive research and innovation capacity in Western Australia by awarding Forrest Scholarships and Fellowships to outstanding young intellects from around the world to conduct research at one of Western Australia’s five universities.
