PhD Opportunity in Cardiovascular Health

The Disorders of Mineralisation Group within the Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute (NHIRI) at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia is looking for individuals interested in pursuing full-time PhDs under the supervision of Associate Professor Joshua Lewis, National Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow and Dr Cassandra Smith, VC Excellence & National Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow.

At a glance

  • The PhD projects will involve the conduct of a Medical Research Future Fund, National Heart Foundation and National Health and Medical Research Council funded work to better understand how cardiometabolic diseases develop and progress across the adult lifespan with a focus on novel approaches to preventing progression of blood vessel disease to clinical events such as heart attacks and strokes. The program has the potential for large-scale implementation if successful. The PhD candidates may also work on developing world-first disease screening and behaviour change programs.
  • Up to three scholarships are available at $33,000 each per year.

Eligibility guidelines

This position is open to domestic and international candidates. To be eligible for this scholarship applicants must:

  • Meet the entry requirements for a PhD at ECU

Selection Criteria

Applicants should have a high level of achievement, including an honours degree or equivalent or demonstrated research experience such as peer reviewed publications. We also encourage current Honours students to apply.

We are seeking individuals who have experience with 1 or more of the following:

  • Nursing, diabetes education, lifestyle coaching, behavioural psychology backgrounds with clinical experience.
  • Clinically trained medical or allied health (physiotherapists, accredited exercise physiologists, occupational therapist, dietetics) professionals.
  • Background in health economics.

Desired skills include excellent communication and people skills, organisational skills, statistics, and understanding of research methods
