Roe’s Abalone Scholarship

The Roe’s abalone recreational fishery occurs in subtropical and temperate coastal waters in Western Australia. Recreational fishing for this species occurs alongside commercial fisheries, that are subject to decreasing market demand, and other uses of the marine environment imposing increasing spatial constraints. This project explores novel approaches for the collection and use of data associated with the Roe’s abalone recreational fishery in Western Australia to Inform assessments, harvest strategies, management and education.

At a glance

Contemporary approaches for monitoring recreational fishing for Roes’ abalone are required depending on management arrangement (which differ between the West Coast or South Coast) and human dimensions, and could include:

  1. Retrospective analysis of historical survey data to detect changes in fishing participation, effort and catch.
  2. Fisher segmentation using survey data to detect fisher typologies and changes in fisher demographics.
  3. Licence data to detect changes in the social dimensions (e.g., residence and age).
  4. Development of catch and social indicators for assessments and harvest strategies.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible, you must meet the entry requirements for a Masters or PhD at ECU

Specifically, the preferred candidate must have

  • Bachelor's degree (Weighted Course Average Mark or WAM > 65) in marine or quantitative fisheries science (if applying for Masters).
  • Master’s or 1st-class Honours degree in marine or quantitative fisheries science (if applying for PhD).
  • Demonstrable experience in survey design and the development of survey indices.
  • Strong skills in data analysis, including data visualisation.
  • Proficiency in coding using R or other relevant platforms.
  • An understanding of, and interest in, the human dimensions of fisheries science (desirable).
  • Experience in human dimensions analysis (desirable).

Terms and Conditions

All scholarships are awarded at ECU’s discretion.

How to apply

To apply please send your CV, academic transcripts, a 1-page proposal, and a brief document (at most 2-pages) addressing the following criteria.

  • Understanding and experience with survey methods and indices.
  • Experience in quantitative analysis of fisheries and human dimensions data.
  • Proficiency in R programming or other relevant languages or software.

In your 1-page proposal, outline your ideas on how data from surveys, licence records, and other relevant sources can be used to enhance our understanding of patterns in fishing participation, effort, catch, and the human dimensions of the Roes’ abalone recreational fishery, and how this could inform the development of effective harvest strategies for this fishery.

Applications due by May 30th, 2025.
