School of Science Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning HDR Scholarship

This Higher Degree by Research scholarship is to support work in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research field. The successful PhD or Masters by Research candidate will work within ECU's Research Centre for AI and Machine Learning, supervised by its staff members. These scholarships include tuition fee sponsorship and a stipend of $35,000 per annum paid fortnightly via electronic funds transfer. Other benefits include partial reimbursement of Visa fees and Overseas Student Health Cover for International students (where applicable). The duration of the scholarship is up to 3 years full-time for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and up to 2 years full-time for Master by Research.

At a glance

The Research Centre for AI and Machine Learning conducts research across the themes of Health Care, Image Analysis and Computer Vision, Defence, and Robotics and Autonomous Systems.

Research in each theme strives to design, develop and evaluate new AI and Machine Learning Techniques that are fit for purpose within that area.

A particular aspect of interest is how human-AI collaboration can be used to enhance outcomes over a purely human or a purely AI system.

Eligibility guidelines

This position is open to domestic and international candidates. To be eligible for this scholarship applicants must:

  • Meet the entry requirements for a PhD or Masters by Research at ECU
  • Nominate a project area aligned to the research interested of the Centre, with a supervision team from the centre.

Selection criteria

  • A strong interest developing new techniques in AI and Machine Learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in systematically addressing a research problem.
  • A developing track record of innovation and creativity in problem solving.
  • Experience with relevant tools and technologies for developing and evaluating AI and Machine Learning techniques.
  • A focus on quality publication.
