The Michael Buenen Scholarship for Lighting Design

The Michael Buenen Scholarship for Lighting Design is aimed to support students at WAAPA studying lighting whose talent and ambition may be hampered by their personal financial circumstances.Michael Buenen was a Lighting Technician and Designer based on the east coast who spent many years in the arts and entertainment industry working in venues and touring Europe, Asia and Africa with different productions. Michael had a heart for mentoring emerging artworkers, who had taken a genuine interest in Lighting Design.This Scholarship is to ensure that Michael’s legacy of mentorship lives on by enabling developing artists to learn their craft in a creative environment. The Scholarship is valued at $3000.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident;
  • be currently enrolled full-time in one of the following courses:    
    • Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services (Lighting Specialisation) - CUA50420 (ECU Course Code C80)
    • Advanced Diploma of Live Production and Management Services (Lighting Specialisation) - CUA60220 (ECU Course Code C81); or
    • Bachelor of Performing Arts - Production and Design Major Y97; and
  • have and maintain an academic progression status of GREEN.

How to apply

Application is made via the ECU Online Scholarship Application Portal. Access to the portal is available between application opening and closing dates.

Applicants will be required to provide a personal statement of no more than 500 words addressing the following;

  • Describe your current financial situation and how this Scholarship would assist you.
  • Describe your future career goals.

Eligible applications will be assessed by a Selection Committee.
