Vice Chancellor's Research Fellow PhD Scholarship

The Centre for Research in Aged Care, School of Nursing and Midwifery is offering a unique opportunity in Mobile Digital Technology and Aged care. This research initiative, bridging the gap between computing, technology, and nursing practice, will be conducted under the supervision of leading researchers in these disciplines. This program is designed to address critical issues in aged care through the lens of technology. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for the aging population, with a particular focus on dementia, pain management, frailty, and end-of-life care. The program offers an opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research combining nursing expertise with innovative technology-driven methods in collaboration with computer sciences, psychology, and other disciplines. This PhD opportunity is a pathway to make a substantial difference in the lives of the older adults in transforming the future of aged care through innovative research in Mobile Digital technology.

Digital and Mobile Technology in the Care of Older Adults
The Centre for Research in Aged Care, School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia, is excited to announce a unique full-time PhD opportunity in the area of Mobile Digital Technology and Aged care. This research initiative, bridging the gap between computing, technology, and nursing practice, will be conducted under the supervision of leading researchers in these disciplines.

About the Program:
This program is designed to address critical issues in aged care through the lens of technology. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for the aging population, with a particular focus on dementia, pain management, frailty, and end-of-life care. The program offers an opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research combining nursing expertise with innovative technology-driven methods in collaboration with computer sciences, psychology, and other disciplines.

Research Structure:

  1. Year 1: Conduct a systematic review on dementia care, pain management, and frailty among older adults, emphasizing the integration of Mobile Digital technology.
  2. Year 2: Develop a prototype of an application based on research findings, focusing on real-time insights and communication for caregivers, nursing staff, and families.
  3. Year 3: Implement a pilot Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of Mobile Digital technology solutions.

Research areas:

  1. How Mobile Digital technology can improve person-centred care for the aging population, especially in areas like dementia, pain management, and frailty
  2. The possibilities for translating technology-driven solutions into practical, everyday applications in aged care
  3. How tech-assisted interventions affect the autonomy and quality of life of older adults through sustainable impact.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must be able to provide evidence of the following:

Academic Qualifications:
Completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Health Sciences, Computer Science, Psychology, or a closely related field.
Master's degree is preferred (either by Research or Coursework) with relevant research publications.

Research Compatibility:
A well-structured research proposal of 800-1000 words that focuses on the integration of Mobile Digital Technology in the care of older adults, addressing areas such as dementia, pain management, frailty, or end-of-life care.

Demonstrated capability and readiness for research, with a special emphasis on nursing, health sciences, or technology-related fields.

Commitment to Research Objectives:
Alignment with the strategic goals of the Centre for Research in Aged Care, particularly in enhancing the care of older people through innovative and technological approaches.

Digital Literacy and Technical Skills:
Demonstrated proficiency in digital literacy, with a willingness to engage in technology-driven research methodologies.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Openness to collaborate across disciplines such as computer sciences, psychology, and other relevant fields.

Language Proficiency:
For international applicants, an IELTS score of 7, with no band less than 7 is required or equivalent language test as per the requirements of the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

Residency and Engagement:
On-campus engagement at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup, Perth WA is required.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated research readiness and capability, especially in nursing, or related health sciences.
  • Alignment with the strategic goals of enhancing the care of older people through innovative and technological approaches.
  • Academic excellence and proven digital literacy.
  • Meets the English language requirements.
