Biography

Dilhan Fernando is an Adjunct Professor of Practice for the School of Business and Law.

Dilhan was educated at Stonyhurst College and the London School of Economics, but the most impactful education he received came from his father's philosophy regarding the family business. Merrill J. Fernando believed that business should serve humanity, and Dilhan carries this forward by leading the family enterprises in tea and cinnamon, and embodying this philosophy through the MJF Foundation and Dilmah Conservation, grounded in the values of integrity, commitment, and kindness.

As Chairman of Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company plc., Dilmah Ceylon Cinnamon Company and Kahawatte Plantations plc., Dilhan strives to drive innovation, sustainability and fresh consumer perspectives of the uniqueness of Sri Lankan produce. As managing Trustee of the MJF Foundation and Director of Dilmah Conservation, his role extends to using a minimum of 15% of the pre-tax profits from Dilmah & MJF Group companies to benefit people and nature.

Dilhan's passion for tea aligns with his strong commitment to ethics and sustainability. Since 2004, he has actively advanced the MJF Foundation's efforts to fulfil his father's vision of serving humanity with kindness to people and nature. He played a key role in establishing Dilmah Conservation in 2007 and building on its successes with the creation of Biodiversity Sri Lanka. This organisation, recognised as Sri Lanka’s leading body for biodiversity and conservation, includes over 80 major corporate members and government representatives.

Dilhan is the Chairman of Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company plc., Kahawatte Plantations plc., Biodiversity Sri Lanka, a national initiative that aims to build a collaborative coalition for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity; Global Compact Network Sri Lanka (UNGC);  and the Climate Action initiative at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

Dilmah Tea was voted Product of the Year 2020 in the world’s largest consumer voted award for product innovation. The award was presented to Dilmah Founder, Merrill J. Fernando and his son Dilhan, at the annual Product of the Year awards in Sydney, Australia
