Dr Rodney Peyton OBE TD

Dr Rodney Peyton OBE TD is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Business and Law and is internationally highly regarded as an accomplished consultant trauma surgeon, author, and trainer with a longstanding commitment to surgical education.

Biography

Dr J.W. Rodney Peyton OBE TD is an accomplished general surgeon, author, and trainer with a longstanding commitment to surgical education, and a proven track record of proactivity in developing and implementing both clinical and training initiatives. He has been involved in medico-legal reporting and court appearances as an expert witness since 1983 and is a founding member of the Expert Witness Institute.

He has been involved in over 40,000 cases, appearing for plaintiff, defendant and as a single joint expert. His practice involves road traffic accidents (whiplash), work-related injuries and medical negligence cases.

He is a well-known author and international speaker on medico-legal issues, being the co-editor of the authoritative Cambridge Textbook of Accident and Emergency Medicine and author of the best-selling book, “Whiplash, the Cervical Spine in Medico-Legal Practice” (https://www.rpeyton.com/shop), written specifically for solicitors, barristers, and judges.

He has extensive experience of delivering Law Society recognised CPD Seminars for solicitors and barristers, in conjunction with McKelvey Associates (NI) and Medical Legal Training Services (UK). He is a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute.

  • Numerous publications before Consultant appointment including research into Vena Caval Filtration, e.g. “Comparison of Greenfield Filter and Vena Caval Ligation” published in Surgery 1982, and Breast Cancer, e.g. “High Colloidal Uptake in Axillary Nodes with Metastatic Disease” published in British Journal of Surgery 1981.  Since then there have been some general publications such as “Management of a Widowmaker” 1987 and “Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in a District Hospital” published in Ulster Medical Journal, January 1993.

  • Co-Editor of “Cambridge Textbook for Accident and Emergency Medicine” published in Cambridge University Press 1997.  Second edition 2001.  This is the largest selling Accident & Emergency book outside the United States.
  • Author (with international colleagues) of three chapters in “Ballistic Trauma” edited by Professor Ryan, published by Blackwell, May 1998.
  • Author “The UK Trauma Surgeon” in “Trauma” edited by Greaves, Ryan & Porter, published by Edward Arnold 1997.
  • Editor/Author “Teaching and Learning in Medical Education” published by Manticore Europe 1998.  Personally authored eight chapters.  This is the largest selling book on medical education worldwide.
