As part of her involvement in the SBL PRME and Sustainability team, Ms Ellen Drpich, Senior School Officer and Wellness Coordinator at School of Business and Law, started a wonderful initiative in collaboration with Wanneroo Urban Pantry (WUP).

Wanneroo Urban Pantry is a non-profit, charitable organisation run by a local Tapping couple in collaboration with City of Wanneroo’s community development team. With the motto ‘Give what you can, take what you need’, Urban Pantry is open for donations from the local community and places them in accessible ‘pantries’, where people in need can receive goods at any time and day.
“As a part of my involvement in the SBL PRME and Sustainability team, I initiated this Urban Pantry collection box in July 2019. Currently we collect and drop these goods off monthly to the pantry”, says Ellen who started a collection box in the School of Business and Law staff room.

She continues to say it fills her with a huge sense of satisfaction being able to re-stock the pantry when she arrives to see it is almost empty.

“Last week I met a beautiful older gentleman who was taking goods from the pantry and asked that I pass on his deepest thanks for our donation. You could tell that it meant a lot to him to have this facility available”, she continues.

The local Tapping couple, who would like to stay anonymous, has previously told media the idea came up after seeing someone leave a supermarket without paying because they could not afford their groceries.

And Ellen agrees this is a very important organisation as there are a lot of people in the community who are struggling to get by.

“It is great to think that these donations are going to our local community members who are perhaps not as fortunate”, she says.

Wanneroo Urban Pantry has just announced they will have a new location where the pantry will be situated from early – mid July. It will be easily accessible and on the doorstep of the Community Services Department and local Senior Citizens Club, on 23 Civic Dr, Wanneroo.

WUP urges the community to please check in, donate what you can and help keep the area tidy to help make this a success for those who need it.  If you are considering doing a collection, WUP would love to hear from you via email or get in contact via their Facebook group.
