It was an honour to have the Federal Member of Parliament Mr. Ian Goodenough to celebrate and inaugurate the receipt of $180,000 Federal funding for the ECU Tax Clinic under the Australian National Tax Clinics Program.
The ECU Tax Clinic operates an independent service, where unrepresented taxpayers and those that may not be able to avail a tax practitioner due to economic, social or personal factors can seek free tax assistance from selected students studying Finance, Accounting and Law. The students are supervised by Associate Professor Prafula Pearce and a registered tax agent Dhvani Thakkar. The clinic operates one day a week from dedicated clinic rooms in SBL Building 2.141 to 143.
In 2022, the ECU Tax Clinic will be extending their services to regional and remote communities through regional partnerships, starting with Carnarvon. The clinic will connect remotely with clients and a nominated supervisor in Carnarvon. This will enable our on-campus students to see first-hand some of the real-world problems that are faced by remote communities and gain experience in solving them.
Students from the School of Business and Law, who have completed the basic taxation law units will continue to have an opportunity to apply to be part of the tax clinic. It is a win/win, a contribution to student education and future career building and assistance to the deserving community who can obtain pro-bono advice, guidance, and assistance on tax matters, including lodgement, debt, review and appeal rights, and general tax law.
