Samika Sen Thakuri is enjoying working with Novotel Perth Langley
Not only was Samika Sen Thakuri offered a job before she completed her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement but two months later she was promoted.
Samika, who is Nepalese, came to Australia in 2020. She says that she researched the universities across Australia and chose ECU because of the quality of the education, the facilities and its ranking as one of the top 500 universities in the world.
She chose to study a Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management with a major in Human Resources.
Samika did a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement at the Novotel Perth Langley (Accor Hotel Group). WIL involves students undertaking a work placement as part of their coursework, enabling them to apply their academic learning in a professional environment.
Samika thrived in the work environment and even before she had completed her placement, she was offered a role as Talent and Culture Administrator. Two months later she was promoted to the Talent and Culture Coordinator position.
Samika says that her studies provided her with the skills and knowledge to tackle problems and provide innovative solutions, and that she is loving her work.
As you may have noticed Samika started her studies just before COVID and so through much of her first year she was in isolation; a very difficult situation when she was so new to Australia and ECU.
Samika wanted to emphasise how supportive ECU was through this difficult period. ‘All my lecturers, counsellors and ECU wellbeing staff were extremely supportive. This support allowed me to reach my learning goals and I was completed my degree in the three years despite the disruption.’
WIL Coordinator Arron Jackson said that he was very proud of Samika who had achieved excellent results while overcoming the COVID challenges in a new environment. ‘I am certain that she will be a valuable asset to the Novotel Perth Langley!’.
