ASA Collaboration
In a promising union of ECU academics and industry, the Australian Shareholders’ Association (ASA) recently engaged with staff and students at ECU to explore opportunities for mutual benefit. ASA is a prominent national organisation that actively seeks to positively influence shareholder outcomes by engaging with company boards, analysing financial reports, and advocating for enhanced shareholder rights.
Lloyd Phillips and Len Roy, senior members of ASA, initiated discussions about establishing a collaborative relationship between ECU and ASA. ECU lecturer Gary Marchioro recognised the potential for students and staff within the School of Business and Law (SBL) to gain invaluable practical insights into the share market, global investment dynamics, and corporate governance from ASA’s experienced experts.
The collaboration took shape through monthly meetings coordinated by Gary Marchioro and Dr. Jaime Yong from the School of Business and Law (SBL) at ECU, which featured a panel of ASA specialists in the Accounting and Finance Discipline. The focus of these meetings is sharing investment strategies and company insights. Students have the opportunity to present their analyses of various companies and receive feedback from ASA members. The questions posed by ASA experts are designed to stimulate critical thinking and prompt students to consider factors and issues that professionals in the field regularly encounter. These meetings have evolved into a dynamic forum that promotes in-depth discussions and analysis, benefiting both ASA members and ECU students.
This alliance between ECU and ASA not only provides students with an exceptional platform to develop practical skills, it also contributes to ASA's mission of promoting the interests of retail shareholders. This successful initiative exemplifies ECU's commitment to offering real-world learning experiences that prepare students for success in their chosen fields.
